Numerical modelling of the hydrodynamic behaviour of the couple... piston-liner

Article scientifique 2016 Anglais

Résumé

The hydrodynamic mechanism of piston ring-cylinder liner is complex and it is difficult to predict its efficiency at the design stage. Because of the critical nature of its duty, the piston ring has been the subject of many theoretical and experimental investigations from many viewpoints. In all these investigations, a known profile is assumed for the piston ring face and the minimum oil film thickness is computed under a multitude of simplifying assumptions. The present article is all attempts to generalize the analysis and make its application physically more meaningful and design oriented. Full hydrodynamic lubrication is assumed for the piston ring lubrication and the impulse capacity concept introduced by Professor Blok is employed to analyze the lubrication process. This method provides an easy, reliable method for analyzing the film behavior. Further, it renders possible the design of an ideal ring profile fitted to the desired film behavior.
