Unlocking Health Equity: Innovating MSM-Friendly Healthcare in Kimberley, South Africa

In Kimberley, South Africa, equitable healthcare access for men who have sex with men (MSM) remains challenging amidst the high HIV/AIDS prevalence. Stigma and discrimination hinder MSM from accessing needed healthcare, and innovative strategies are needed to establish MSM-friendly services. This qualitative study investigated 34 healthcare workers' experiences at Masakhani and Betty Gaetsewe clinics, guided by the health belief model. Perceived stigma emerges as a key barrier, fostering internalized stigma and undermining self-esteem among MSM. Negative attitudes from healthcare providers and community members, coupled with fears of disclosure, compound systemic barriers. The absence of tailored MSM-friendly facilities exacerbates disparities. This study aimed to cultivate strategies for MSM-friendly healthcare, emphasizing inclusivity and respect. By cocreating safe spaces that prioritize MSM needs, trust and engagement can be bolstered. Through collaborative efforts, informed by stakeholders' lived experiences, the research seeks transformative change in healthcare delivery, advancing health equity for MSM populations in Kimberley and beyond.
